List Building - 4 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your List

[ by Bob Storrs ]
So you have a mailing list but you're having difficulty communicating with it. Perhaps you have a web site and you're getting a little traffic and occasionally you make a sale. You're frustrated because you know you should be doing more business but you don't know quite how to do it.

You have the idea that if you could communicate more with your list you could develop a relationship with them so that they would buy more but the thought of send out regular emails with good solid information on a regular basis is overwhelming. If any of these situations apply to you then you have plenty of company. There are many online businesses that just don't do the business they could because the thought of email marketing is too mind boggling.

So how do we make it easy?

Each person has his or her own obstacles. The following 4 points are some of the basic steps you must take if you are going to build a good level of communication with your list.

One or all of these may be what you're missing.

1) First and foremost you must have an auto responder service. This service will insure that your emails are sent out on a schedule determined by you. Your job is to create the content and set up the schedule and the auto responder does the rest.

2) If you don't already have one, you must include an opt-in form on your web site so people can subscribe to your list. Your auto responder service will provide the form for you and you simply paste it into your web site. In addition to your web site you also need to have a squeeze page whose sole function is to add subscribers to your list.

3) You must create a sequence of emails that are sent out by the auto responder. Sometimes, if you're just getting started this can be a little daunting but if you just jump in and do it you'll get better with time. Write like you're sending a note to a friend. Make it informal yet informative. To get some samples emails, subscribe to a few newsletters and study them. Make note of how they are written, what you like about them and what you dislike. Which ones did you enjoy reading and why. Print them off or save them and make notes so you can learn from their examples.

4) Most auto responders have a feature that allows you to track which of your emails is being opened. This helps you test your subject lines and to test which emails lead to a click on your web site. This is an indication of the effectiveness of your writing. Just keep in mind that when you're just getting started there is a learning curve and the only way you're going to get better is to keep at it and learn by your mistakes. When you do learn something make note of it so you don't repeat the same mistake again.
